Frequently Asked Questions

How should I choose a mattress?

With all of the choices available, it can be a daunting task to choose a new mattress. We recommend cataloging what you need from a mattress before you start shopping:

  • Has your lifestyle changed since buying your last mattress? (e.g. do you now share your bed with pets or children?)
  • Has your body changed in any way that affects your need for support or comfort preferences?
  • How much space do you have in your bedroom?
  • How much space do you want in your mattress?
  • Does your partner have the same needs as you?

Once you have the answers to those questions, it’s time to start shopping.

How can I test the comfort of a mattress?

The Mattress Store offers you the ability to shop for your mattress from the comfort of your home, but there is no substitute for actually trying a mattress out in your local store. When you test a mattress, we recommend shopping with your partner to make sure the mattress meets their needs as well.

Start by removing your shoes and lying on the bed in the same position that you normally sleep in. Lie on the mattress for 5-10 minutes if possible. (That may seem like a long time, but research has shown that customers that test a mattress for 10+ minutes are much more likely to be happy with their purchase.)

As you test the mattress, pay close attention to the way it feels both when you first lie down and the longer you lie there. Concentrate on the lower back support and postural alignment and make sure you feel plenty of comfort at the shoulders and hips. Do you notice any pressure points or limbs falling asleep?

How much should I spend on a mattress?

Buy the best mattress that’s within your budget. Remember, most people replace their mattress every 7-10 years. For a mattress that costs $1,000, that’s only about thirty cents a day! The Mattress Store offers financing that help spread out the cost over a few months instead of paying for it all at once.

Should I worry about the warranty on a new mattress?

Yes, however the warranty is there to protect against manufacturing defects, not normal wear from regular use. The warranty also doesn’t cover issues with comfort – another important reason for thoroughly testing a mattress before purchasing.

Warranties are also not an indicator of how long the product should be used before replacing it. Your body (and its needs) can change a lot within the warranty timeframe and you may find that what is perfect for you today may not be right for you 5 years from now.

Can I use my old box spring with my new mattress?

You should never put a new mattress on an old foundation. A mattress is designed to work with its companion foundation. Mismatched sets can affect overall comfort and support. In fact, buying mattress without its matching foundation may even affect the terms of the warranty.

Plus, it is important to the safety of you and your family to ensure that both pieces meet or exceed federal flammability standards – and most box springs manufactured before 2007 don’t meet those standards.
